Chromebooks & Carts

Every morning, teachers open their Chromebook carts expecting fully charged devices. When students sit down to a dead Chromebook five minutes before a lesson, the entire instructional period is at risk. Most charging failures are not hardware problems. They are the result of small, preventable habits that compound over time. After managing 380 Chromebooks across 29 carts, here is what makes the biggest difference.

THE NUMBER ONE REASON CHROMEBOOKS DO NOT CHARGE

The most common culprit is improper placement in the cart. Each slot has a charging connector that only makes contact when the device is seated correctly. When a student rushes and drops the Chromebook into the wrong slot or at an angle, the connection never happens. The device sits in the cart all night without receiving any power. The fix requires teacher enforcement: every device goes back to its assigned numbered slot, every time, with the cable fully and gently connected.

WHY CABLES FAIL PREMATURELY

Charging cables take a beating daily. Students pull on the cord instead of the connector and wrap them too tightly. A cable that looks fine externally can have internal damage causing intermittent or failed charging. Teachers should check that no cables are hanging loose or bent sharply at the connector. If a device consistently fails to charge from the same slot, submit a ticket immediately.

KEEPING CARTS CLEAN AND IN PLACE

Carts should never be moved from their assigned location without IT coordination. Moving a cart can disrupt the power load balance and expose devices to dust, moisture, and physical damage. Keep carts clean - debris inside slots can interfere with charging contacts over time.

THE TEACHER ROLE

IT CAD handles the technical setup, repairs, updates, and deployments. The daily care of these devices happens in the classroom. Teachers who enforce end-of-class collection routines, verify charging placement, and report issues promptly are the reason their carts consistently have fully charged devices every morning. If you notice a pattern of uncharged devices or recurring cart issues, submit a ticket at itcad.us.
